Types of Heating Systems

Heat Pumps

A heat pump is a device that works electronically to extract heat from point A and move it to point B. They transfer the heat by circulating a refrigerant between two heat exchanger coils. In the first coil, the refrigerant evaporates at low pressure as it collects heat from its surroundings. Then, it’s compressed on the way to the other coil, where it is condensed at high pressure. This is where it releases the heat it absorbed along the way. Air conditioners and refrigerators are examples of this process, but only operating in the cooling mode.

Furnaces

Another method of heating is furnace systems that operate and run on natural gas. First, natural gas ignites in the burner, then the flames heat a heat exchanger, exhausting out of the flue. The metal heat exchanger then transfers the heat to the air that comes in, while the blower in the furnace pushes the warm air into the ducts, and it is distributed throughout the home. The cold air from the house is pulled back into the furnace by way of the return ducts, and the process repeats.

Air Handlers

An air handler consists of an air filter, a blower, and coils and does exactly what it sounds like. It handles the air. The air handler draws air in, passes it over the coils that either cool or heat the air, then it is blown back out into the home through the ducts. It is a critical piece of the air system that ensures the treated air is transported throughout the house.
